I’ve updated my “About Me” page due to acquiring new skills and reviving old goals that are still stubborn in my heart.
I’m happy to know that Medium Partner Program now includes South Africa. That is the same joy I got from posting my first story:
A bit about my background
I was born on 28 October 1997, in South Africa. My name Mbango is pronounced as: “Mm-ba-nn-go” and my Lefoka surname as: “Lee-foo-ka”.
The written word has always been a fascination to me throughout my childhood — especially how words can be organised in a way that creates scenes in my mind. In primary school I came up with the idea of wooing girls using my short stories. It worked to hook their attention but face-to-face communication would make me cower in fear. I threw away all those short stories after I realised their limitation.
If I’m not typing stuff, I binge watch anime, cosplay and parkour videos. 😁

I worked in the retail industry in the past 6 years. Meeting countless celebrities became a norm. Some would leave tips just for pushing their trolley as I engaged in conversation with them. Regulars would buy additional stuff to help with reaching our store target. This was mostly during the festive season. We knew an influx of customers meant only one thing: bonus checks. 😁
Of course, there were challenges like any other workplace. I used those to my benefit though, like building important life skills. If you want to read more about the retail staff experience, click below:
Recently, I completed writing my unpublished novel Tell Me It Ends. I will inform you guys on when I’ll officially publish it though. 😏
To give you a brief synopsis: it’s a contemporary south African story written in first-person perspectives. It explores themes such as date rape drugs, sexual assault forensic exams, incarceration and amnesia. The story features two main protagonists, Keletso and Mamello. The setting is around central Johannesburg, the very places I’ve personal experience in.
I do hope these little details stay with you until I finally drop the book!😊
Looking ahead
To be honest, I initially joined Medium just to write for fun and building genuine connections. Overtime, I realized the value of monetizing my work and building a sustainable writing career. My mind was completely blown when I discovered that you can actually assemble your Medium stories into a published book — shoutout to “Astris C’s article, An Announcement To My Readers, for opening my eyes to that possibility!
