PHUQUE risking it all

2 min readMay 25, 2016

Amygdala be damned. To my family’s detriment I’m attracted to risk. Risk in business, risk to capital, and risk in love and life. I find comfort in surrounding myself in risk.

I wish they made a beta machine whose sole purpose would be to synthesize ones thoughts and actions towards risk. With a flick of a switch it would develop a proven processes to address the theme of risk.

Risk, in the broadest definition, is mostly perceived to be bad. After all what happens when you take a risk and things don’t work out in your favor? Do you lose? And do you win if it does?

Risk doesn’t always connote a win or loss. When you click on a friends FB page and you’re bored as hell after ten seconds did you risk, much? Did you lose? Is ten seconds equalling boredom a loss? In this overly simplistic example, I don’t really think so.

But what happens when you begin to contemplate larger risks. Risks like starting a new business, investing money in the real estate market, or dropping out to pursue a dream or passion?

The brain responds to big challenges by triggering the amygdala, the fear center in the brain. If the challenge is perceived as too great, if the person stumbles, the fear becomes crippling and the person gives up, often with despair or self-criticism. If the steps are small, the fear mechanism is quiet, and the brain develops new habits from the repetition of small steps.

One may then intuit that taking small steps when endeavoring a risky proposition may decrease risk. This may ultimately prove true, but it’s the development of new habits that’s equally important.

New habits may result from new learnings; learnings perhaps acquired through introspective review of lessons learned through previous failures.

Don’t fear failure. Instead fear the failure to learn through failure.
