There Will Always Be Space for Fredzio
A vet’s words that gave us comfort when everything else felt like it was falling apart
And here we are.
I was going to write a story yesterday. I thought I might call it “There’s Still Hope.”
Given how things have turned out, I’m not so sure anymore. But hope is the last to die — and I’d rather stay as optimistic as I can.
My dog, Fredzio, is sick. Very sick.
And I can’t help him.
That, perhaps, is the worst feeling in the world — watching someone you love suffer and being completely, devastatingly helpless. No matter how much you’d give to lift the pain from their tiny body.
Fredzio has a genetic heart condition — something not uncommon among Schnauzers. We’ve always been vigilant. We did checkups, we were careful. We thought we were managing it well.
But that’s not the issue now.
His heart, for an 11-year-old dog, is holding up as best as it can. The problem began just ten days ago when we noticed him coughing — a deep, scary cough that sounded like he was suffocating. It started happening when he got excited: when we’d come home, or on walks, or…
