Where I come from says everything about where I am going.
When Gigi and Kobe Bryant died, I had to call my dad. He wasn’t only a huge fan but we had just been talking about the interview where Kobe said he was so proud to be a #GirlDad. Because that’s been my dad’s life since 2003, when he knew my mom wasn’t coming back. I slept on and he began making plans.
Hi, my name is Elle Hall. I was raised by a single father who I owe everything and our extended family. Every part of me and my personality can be traced back to my dad, even the ugliest parts. By not having a true maternal figure growing up, I found my femininity and even my identity in other ways.
My dad taught me from a young age to talk about my thoughts and feelings. He had his own childhood issues that he dealt with raising me on his own. He had to really deal with how he felt about those issues and what it meant for us once we were on our own. But, despite that, he created a home where I could ask for help and learn without fear. The cracks my mom created when she left were filled with our “big life talks” to and from school.
I was diagnosed with anxiety and panic disorder at eleven. I was already an anxious child with a perfectionist streak. But, teachers just told my dad that I was “extremely driven academically”. It became…
